Besides trout, the Cowichan also supports Steelhead and three species of Pacific Salmon: Coho, Chinook and Chum. It is one of only two rivers in British Columbia known to have Brown trout.
Winter Steelhead enters the Cowichan by about mid December. By Christmas there is usually a good run in the river. Steelhead numbers have increased with the Cowichan River seeing sea-run Brown and Cutthroat trout, and fall runs of Chinook, Coho and Chum salmon - mostly Chum.
